The MASH Helicopter: A Lifesaver in the Korean War
The Bell H-13 Sioux helicopter played a crucial role during the Korean War as a medical evacuation (MedEvac) aircraft, first deployed in 1951. Designed to carry wounded soldiers from the battlefield, each skid was fitted with a cocoon-style stretcher pod for patient transport.
The H-13 was easily recognized by its distinctive bubble-shaped Plexiglas canopy—often called the “Goldfish Bowl”—made famous by the TV series MASH*, set during the Korean War. Nicknamed the “Angel of Mercy,” the H-13 evacuated around 18,000 United Nations casualties during the conflict.
To improve comfort and care for patients, medical crews made several field modifications. These included removable litter covers with Plexiglas windows, warm air from the engine manifold directed into the litters, and external plasma bottle holders near the cabin doors for blood transfusions during flight.
